This grayish blue-green specimen is a secondary phosphate formed by alteration of ore deposits. The mineral occurs near the surface of sulfide deposits in the oxidation zone. The crystals on the first specimen form as a crust on a globular mass. On the second specimen, there are small fan shaped prismatic crystals on top of a crusty surface. Vivianite in mined as a coloring agent.
