While doing your research please note that the specimens spelling is expectable
as barite or barytes. This is a very nice combination specimen from the Elmwood mine.
The huge white dome like balls are known as barite balls. Barite occurs in
several colors from white, orange, blue, flame green to colorless. It is quite
brittle and has a hardness of 3.
Sphalerite is a common mineral, and occurs in many different colors. Iron impurities are almost always present in this mineral. However, our sphalerite is somewhat transparent, so it must not contain a large amount of iron. This sphalerite sample has dark reddish and purple crystals. It is quite beautiful.
