Amethyst geodes are found all over the world and are considered common. It's the quality of the crystal that is of value. The purple coloring is due to iron mixtures and radioactive decay. As part of the quartz group, an amethyst has a hardness of 7 .5 . In Greek the name most likely means "not drunken" Please note, that the crystal formation is encased within the melt. This geode specimen is from Brazil and was photographed while on loan to Cape Cod Rocks. We would like to thank Taryn's Mirror in Hyannis for their contribution to this educational resource.
